Remembering 9/11 in South Carolina

Friday, Sept. 11, marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the attack on United Airlines Flight 93.

Communities, towns and non-profit organizations across South Carolina are hosting a multitude of events to honor the victims, first responders, and servicemembers who risked their lives in the aftermath of the attacks.

Here are a few events taking place across the Palmetto State:

 

Tunnel 2 Towers South Carolina: 5K Run & Walk:

This annual event raises money for the Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation, which provides mortgage free homes, to Gold Star and fallen first responder families, builds accessible homes for disabled Veterans and first responders, offers programs to eliminate Veteran homelessness, amongst other programs benefitting Veterans, First Responders and surviving family members.

The race will take place on Friday, Sept. 4, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, located at 1101 Lincoln St, Columbia, SC 20201.

25th Anniversary 9/11 Patriot Day Commemorative Program

Richland School District Two is hosting a 9/11 remembrance event on Sept. 11 to honor and commemorate the first responders, community members, and fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice as a result of the 9/11 attacks.

The ceremony will take place on Friday, Sept. 11, in front of the flag at the Richland School District Two Office building, located at 763 Fashion Dr, Columbia, SC 29229, from 8:45 a.m. to 9:04 a.m.

 

9/11 Morning of Remembrance Ceremony

This event, hosted by the 9/11 Remembrance Foundation will take place on Friday, Sept. 11, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, located at 1101 Lincoln St., Columbia, SC 20201. The ceremony will begin at 8:40 a.m.

The ceremony honors those who were lost during the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2011, as well as local heroes who gave their lives in service to the community and nation.

9/11 Memorial Stair Climb:

Clemson University's Military and Veteran Engagement Office invite the public to join Clemson's employees, students and community in honoring the lives lost on 9/11 and the first responders who answered the call, through a 110 story stair-climb in honor of the firefighters who climbed the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. 

The event will take place at Littlejohn Coliseum, located at 219 Perimeter Rd, Clemson, SC 29634, on Friday, Sept.11. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the event will begin at 8:30 a.m.

9/11 Memorial Ceremony

North Myrtle Beach Parks & Recreation is hosting its 9-11 Memorial at the NMB Park & Sports Complex, located at 150 Citizens Circle, Little River, SC 29566, on Friday, Sept. 11. The event, presented by the North Myrtle Beach Lions Club is free to the public and will begin at 1 p.m.

South Carolina Remembers 9/11: 25 Years Later

The South Carolina State Museum will feature a display in the front lobby that explores how SC rallied together after 9/11, sharing community stories, artifacts and other items recovered from Ground Zero.

The display will be available to view inside the museum lobby until Jan. 3., 2027, and is included with the cost of admission.

SCETV "Remembering 9/11: South Carolina Reflects" Premiere

South Carolina ETV and Public Radio will premiere "Remembering 9/11: South Carolina Reflects" on Thursday, Sept. 10, starting at 8 p.m.

The documentary special compiles personal accounts from South Carolinians who either witnessed, covered or were affected by the events that took place on Sept. 11.

The documentary will air on SCETV, and can be watched online at SCETV.org, PBS.org and via the SCETC and PBS apps.

Charleston 9/11 Heroes Run

The Travis Manion Foundation is hosting the Charleston 9/11 Heroes Run on Saturday, Sept. 12, starting at 9 a.m.

The race will begin at 235 Seven Farms Dr., Charleston, SC 29492.

6th Annual Lowcountry 9/11 Memorial Motorcycle Ride

This free event, open to bikers across South Carolina the nation, honors the lives of the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11 attacks. The ride will take place on Sunday, Sept. 13, and will begin at the Omar Shrine, located at 176 Patriots Point Rd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464. Registration will begin at 12 p.m. and the ride will commence at 2:20 p.m. The event will feature music, catered food, and other events.
