Governor Laura Kelly Proclaims September as Hunger Action Month in Kansas
Governor Laura Kelly proclaimed September as "Hunger Action Month" in Kansas on Aug. 27. The proclamation highlights the importance of ensuring all Kansans have access to safe, nutritious and affordable food while raising awareness of food insecurity across the state.
"Hunger Action Month reminds us that improving nutrition and reducing hunger requires all of us working together," Jeff Usher, chair of the Governor's Council on Wellness, said. "By strengthening partnerships and supporting organizations that connect Kansans with healthy food, we can build healthier communities and improve quality of life across our state."
Food insecurity continues to affect thousands of Kansans, impacting health, learning, productivity and overall well-being. In Kansas, an estimated 143,460 children and 56,044 seniors experience food insecurity, underscoring the need for continued collaboration to improve food security across Kansas.
Addressing hunger requires coordinated efforts from state agencies, health care providers, schools, businesses, nonprofit organizations, faith communities, local leaders and the charitable food system, including regional food banks such as Harvesters, the Kansas Food Bank and Second Harvest Community Food Bank. Together, these organizations help connect Kansans with nutritious food and resources that support healthier communities.
Hunger Action Month encourages Kansans to take action by volunteering, supporting local hunger relief organizations and raising awareness of food insecurity. Working together, we can improve access to nutritious food, strengthen our communities and help every Kansan thrive.
